Some tips for Beagle training.
Beagles are a cross breed between several breeds of hunting dogs which were found in England. But beagles are smaller breeds and not like their ancestors who could be used for hunting foxes, quails etc. Beagles are more of domestic dogs and are fun to play with. They also have strong sense of smell and are also used as sniff dogs. They are known for their snoopy droopy ears and weigh around 8 kg.
Beagles are very energetic and fun loving and because of this trait it can become difficult to train them. You need a lot of patience to train beagles. But if you try hard they can easily jump over a fence, and learn other antics.
You first need to enrol the Beagle into obedience class but before that you need to keep certain beagle training guidelines in mind. House training or toilet training is the most important task. You need to really make it clear that eliminating in the house is just not allowed. Hence for the first few weeks you need to take the Beagle out every one hour. You need to take him out whenever he has exerted himself, take him out once you awake and also before going to bed. But you also need to praise the beagle by patting and cuddling him each time it eliminates outside the house. So once the Beagle gets the message that he can make you happy by eliminating outside, he will try and do it more often.
Beagle training is not so simple, they are very stubborn by nature and unless you are firm and consistent with the training you cannot train them. You need to hold their interest and have to keep them going if you want to train them. Also disciplining them is a tough task, you need to show them the correct way but never hit them. By firmly saying No you can make the Beagle understand but this training has to begin since it’s a puppy. You also need to praise them when they behave in front of guests, by praising the Beagle will be happy to know that it has made you happy.
Other important Beagle training aspect is the come command you need to understand when and how to use this command. Some tips regarding the usage of this command is as follows:
- Never use the command with a negative experience like giving a pill or for giving a bath. This way the Beagle will start ignoring this command.
- It is important that you don’t use the word come if the Beagle does not respond to it. You can instead use here and front like words for the same command.
- The come command is very important and you need a lot of patience to correctly teach it.
- When teaching the come command you can take your dog’s name loudly followed by come and as soon as it starts running toward you try to move back so that it can run further to catch you. Once it catches you, you should hug, cuddle and praise the dog. You can also treat the dog by giving it a biscuit or a bone to lick on. You can carry on this reward game till the Beagle gets trained to run to you on being called upon.
- Also you need to hold on to the beagle’s collar and feed the treat, this way the dog understands to sit in front of you after it has run to you and not just take circles around you after reaching you. And after treating the dog you can release him by saying go. This lesson has to be repeated till the Beagle can understand to run and sit in front of you each time you call him.
Gradually with training and patience your Beagle will understand all your commands and will become a trained pet.
